I received notice today that Vidcode surpassed their first goal in their Kickstarter Campaign! VidCode is an app that teaches teen girls JavaScript through video processing. With VidCode, students learn to customize video filters, create interactive stories, and stop-motion animations, all with code.

Here is their story:

“As women professionals in computer science, we discovered a shared passion for working in technology, but felt a mutual chagrin that the tech world is still heavily male-dominated. We wanted to find a way to teach girls that coding and working in tech is creative and fun. So we spoke with girls. We learned how disconnected they feel from computer science classes (we knew how that felt), and the misperceptions, i.e., tech is boring. Soon after, we created Vidcode, a video coding app that is not only self-expressive, but paired with a hobby girls love – creating and sharing videos.”

I have been watching these women work together since the inception of the idea/product at Startup Weekend EDU NYC this past January, where they won the competition. Since then Alexandra Diracles, Melissa Halfon, Leandra Tejedor, and Terry Ruth VanDuyn (and assisted by Ken Warner) have worked to create a product that draws girls into the world of programming via a natural area of interest: video. With 100% of their goal achieved, they plan to deliver Vidcode to girls and schools next year. But you can try today by visiting their website at http://www.vidcode.io/.
